40 Caliber Weapons

One of the most popular 40 caliber guns in history, was the Bofors 40 mm gun. This weapon was actually an anti-aircraft auto cannon developed by Bofors. This weapon was utilized during World War II and it is commonly referred to as the Bofors gun. This however,is just of many 40 caliber weapon in history.

In World War I, the Russian navy used a 40 caliber naval gun to defend ships. The guns were originally manufactured in 1895 and they were continuously made until at least 1906. The 40 caliber naval guns were installed in at least seventeen Russian naval ships and were highly effective at protecting those ships.

There are a myriad of 40 caliber weapons, but each has a barrel of approximately the same diameter, which would be slightly larger than the ammunition itself. 4o caliber ammunition, when measured by certain standards, is .40 of an inch in diameter. However, other measurements may apply, such as 40mm caliber ammunition.

Generally, a caliber of ammunition is thought to match to guns only, but other weapons measure ammunition according to caliber as well. For example, there may be a 40 caliber cannon or rifle. In fact, any type of weapon may use 40 caliber ammunition, whether it be measured in inches or according to different standards.

40 caliber bullets are fairly large, when compared to other ammunition. However, the weapons themselves fall about mid size and are not as heavy and cumbersome as weapons used for larger ammunition.
